Introduction

Recent scientific achievements like the availability of the human genome on the one hand, and tremendous technological advances in measurement apparatus on the other hand, have led to an ever increasing data explosion in several -omics fields. Both developments give rise to new multi-disciplinary life science or -omics applications in the post genomic era. Such research applications require distributed storage and analysis of huge amounts of data. A new way of dealing with data is required, if we still want to be able to answer new research questions resulting from this tremendous amount of data (application pull). Recent technical advances in distributed storage, computing, visualisation and networking (technical push) feed hopes that we will be able to do so. Grids offer ways of combining these technical advances. In The Netherlands both NIKHEF and SARA are major players in hosting the Dutch Grid infrastructure.
