In this series of five seminars the student will get acquinted with topics from bioinformatics, omics, life sciences and e-science that are relevant for medical informatics.
The module Bioinformatics aims to give the student a more comprehensive definition of bioinformatics related to medical informatics. After completing the module the student will have a clear definition of the relation between bioinformatics and medical informatics. At the same time the student will have a more detailed definition of his/her role in “life sciences”. Several subjects are being presented that are relevant for both bioinformatics and medical informatics. Besides, skills are gained in the preparation of a paper presentation.
The module e-infrastructures presents modern approaches to address problems faced by researchers when dealing with the increasing amount and complexity of biomedical data. Besides having an overview of this new field of research (e-Science), the students will also have hands-on experience during the course.

Course description and schedule

Seminar 1. Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics
In this seminar we will focus on bioinformatics, medical informatics and their intersection (i.e. biomedical informatics). Bioinformatics and medical informatics are partially overlapping and complementary disciplines that are both required for the management and processing of biomedical data. This gives unique opportunities for collaboration. Biomedical Informatics is the ‘new’ discipline that is the cross-section between informatics, medicine and genomics.
  • Date: Tuesday, 1 February
  • Time: 9.00-14.30
  • Location: AMC, L0-217 (9.00-11.00); L0-211 (11.00-12.30); L0-217 (13.00-14.30)
  • Lecturer: Prof. dr. A.H.C. van Kampen

Seminar 2. e-infrastructures & biomedical research
Automated means for data analysis in biomedical research has become a necessity due to amount and complexity of the data. In this seminar we will introduce concepts and resources that enable and enhance data analysis for biomedical research (e-Science). The course will present an overview of state-of-the-art advanced ICT for biomedical research, such as e-infrastructure grids, workflows and clouds, also providing the opportunity for hands-on experience with the Dutch e-Science infrastructure (BiGGrid).

  • Date: Tuesday, 15 February
  • Time: 9.00-17.00
  • Location: AMC, L0-219 (9.00-12.00); L0-211 (12.30-15.30); K01-208 (16.00-17.00)
  • Lecturer: Dr. S.D. Olabarriaga

Seminar 3. Systems biology: from molecule to patient
